Questions people ask me every day.

Quick, straightforward answers about enrollment, coverage and working with a broker. Open any question to learn more.

When can I enroll in an ACA Marketplace plan?

Marketplace Open Enrollment generally runs from November 1 through January 15. For 2027 coverage, enrollment starts November 1, 2026. Outside that window, you may still be able to enroll after certain life changes or through Medicaid or CHIP if eligible.

What can qualify me for a Special Enrollment Period?

Common examples include losing qualifying health coverage, moving to a new service area, getting married, having or adopting a child, or aging off a parent’s plan. The timing and documentation rules depend on the event, and many situations use a 60 day enrollment window.

Can an ACA plan decline me because of my health?

No. Marketplace plans must cover treatment for pre existing conditions and cannot reject you, charge you more or exclude essential health benefits because of a condition you had before coverage began. Rules can be different for some non ACA private products, so I explain those differences before you apply.

Could I qualify for a very low monthly premium?

Possibly. Marketplace savings are based on factors such as estimated household income, household size and where you live. Some applicants qualify for substantial premium tax credits, but a specific price is never guaranteed until the Marketplace reviews the application.

What do Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum mean?

These categories describe how covered costs are generally shared between you and the plan, not the quality of doctors or care. Bronze plans usually have lower premiums and more cost sharing when you use care, while Gold and Platinum plans generally have higher premiums and cover a larger share. Silver is also the only category that can include income based cost sharing reductions.

Will the same Marketplace plan cost more through a broker?

No separate broker fee is added to your premium for helping with a Marketplace enrollment. When the plan, household information and application details are the same, using a licensed broker does not create a higher version of that plan. My role is to help you compare choices, enroll correctly and understand what you selected.

What is the difference between ACA coverage and private coverage?

ACA Marketplace plans include federal consumer protections, cover essential health benefits and cannot deny you for pre existing conditions. Private options sold outside the Marketplace can work differently. Some are medically underwritten, have exclusions or waiting periods, or pay set benefits instead of covering expenses like major medical insurance. I compare the details side by side so you know exactly what each option does and does not cover.

What is a fixed indemnity plan?

A fixed indemnity plan pays a stated dollar benefit when a covered service or event occurs, such as a doctor visit, test or hospital stay. The payment is based on the policy schedule rather than the full amount of the medical bill. These plans can help with certain costs, but they are not a substitute for comprehensive major medical coverage and may include exclusions, limits or waiting periods.

What is the difference between major medical and short term medical coverage?

Major medical coverage is designed for broader, ongoing protection against significant medical expenses. ACA compliant major medical plans include essential health benefits and protections for pre existing conditions. Short term medical is designed mainly for temporary gaps between other coverage. It may use medical underwriting and may exclude pre existing conditions or benefits that comprehensive plans must cover. Availability and duration also vary by state.
